Why The Big Green Egg Barbecue Grill Smokes Other BBQ Grills

If you're a grill enthusiast, you've probably heard about the Big Green Egg grill. It's a ceramic barbecue grill you can use as a grill, smoker and also an outdoor oven. It is so adaptable you can cook anything from hamburgers and steaks and other standard barbeque grill foods to desserts, breads as well as pizza.

Eggheads can't live without the Big Green Egg, but you may be thinking what makes the Egg (as it's fondly called) different from other grills.

Possibly the greatest difference is the overall look of the grill. The Big Green Egg smoker is well, green and shaped like an egg. Although I can't say the reason why it's green, I will state that the egg shape was created (on purpose) to present the power to control and maintain heat inside the grill much better than other grills.

The second most important difference is the material. Instead of being made with metal, the Big Green Egg features thick ceramic walls. Ceramic is significantly more durable when compared with other materials, which means the Egg will last longer than other barbecue grills, it can be cooked on year long (even with freezing temps). It's also safer, particularly if there are kids playing close by, because the ceramic material stays cooler compared to conventional metal grills plus you always cook with the lid down, which means you never have to worry about flare-ups.

There are lots of other differences but certainly one of my favorites is the number of fans the Big Green Egg has. You'll find Egg admirers and gatherings throughout the United States, and Eggheads are willing to share their stories, advice and recipes at events and on the Egghead discussion board. I can't think of any other grill that has this kind of following.

Now, the Egg has some disadvantages in comparison with other grills. For example, it isn't a cheap grill. You can expect to fork out around $700 for a large Big Green Egg. Additionally, you need to use lump wood charcoal, which is not always easy to find and can be quite a bit more expensive than standard charcoal briquettes. The Big Green Egg also has a smaller cooking surface compared to many gas grills, which means you are going to want a backup grill if you're grilling for many people.

However, the flexibility of the Big Green Egg grill, the ability to grill, smoke or even bake with your Egg, and the awesome results you get (the Egg is very forgiving, even for inexperienced grillers) are well worth the purchase price. If you're a bbq fanatic and you do a lot of smoking in addition to grilling you are going to appreciate the quality and the results you get while using the Big Green Egg.
